Cyber-Share has been selected to display a poster in the National Science Foundation (NSF) atrium during the HRD JAM event, February 18. This is a great opportunity to engage NSF Program Officers and event attendees, disseminating widely the accomplishments of the Center. Center PI and Director Ann Gates represent the Center at the meeting and during the poster session.

Cyber-Share had an outstanding turnout for UTEP’s first Orange & Blue Day Saturday, February 14th. Over forty high school students toured the center, meeting with Cyber-Share students and staff, and enthusiastically learning about the STEM projects at the Center.

Co-PI Natalia Villanueva led Cyber-Share’s annual student workshop on creating Elevator Speeches on February 6, 2015. An elevator speech is a short summary used to quickly and simply describe a students’ research project and/or interests and the significance of the research. This is a key skill our students develop that they will use throughout their careers. Cyber-Share asks the students to develop one slide to go with their presentation, which is recorded in PowerPoint. This provides an important record of our students and their research.

We would like to extend a warm Cyber-ShARE welcome to Dr. Monika Akbar! Dr. Akbar received her Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech in Fall 2013. Her research interests include information storage and retrieval, digital libraries (DLs), online community detection, and data mining. Her research explores ways to advance domain-specific digital libraries such as educational DLs by addressing the information needs of DL users and helping them to identify useful resources.

Former NASA astronaut and University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) distinguished alumnus John "Danny" Olivas, Ph.D., has joined UTEP as Director of the Center for the Advancement of Space Safety and Mission Assurance Research (CASSMAR) and will oversee space initiatives on campus.
