Azucena Zamora, CPS Ph.D. Candidate, will be recognized for her academic achievements at The University of Texas at El Paso’s annual celebration of academic excellence, Honors Convocation ceremony is on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. in Magoffin Auditorium.

The amount of information gathered during a crisis can be crushing if not managed correctly. VACCINE specializes in Visual Analytics, the science of creating tools, apps, dashboards, and other visual systems to both analyze and provide information to an end user. In the event of a catastrophe such as a chemical spill, natural disaster, disease outbreak or a terrorist attack, information will be coming from many sources, such as video feed, digital images, data from sensors and simulations, and text documents from police and health-care agencies to name a few.

Dr. Miller obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 2008, researching high energy-density plasma physics. He joined Lockheed Martin Space Systems working in nonlinear analysis from 2007 until 2012, with major programs including the Orion crewed spacecraft and the JUNO, GRAIL, MAVEN and OSIRIS-REX robotic satellites.

Amorita Armendariz has been selected to receive a 2015 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship.
Amorita is a Cyber-ShARE-funded and EEB doctoral student co-advised by Vanessa Lougheed and Dr. Tweedie. Amorita plans to study biogeochemical cycling in transitional environments between land-aquatic-ocean systems in the Arctic.

For over two decades, Gates has been a leader in initiatives that support Hispanics and members of other underrepresented groups in the computing field. She is perhaps best known for leading the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), an alliance of 13 institutions whose work has had large and sustained positive impact on recruitment, retention, and advancement of Hispanics in computing.
